X-struments – a workshop on digital music systems between instrument and jukebox

What kind of instrument in concert can be surprising for the player? When is this desirable, and is that still an instrument at all? The concept of X-struments deals with forms of shared influence on sound processes between performer and machine and with meta-control as the principle of machine control at various hierarchical levels.

Hannes Hoelzl has been researching this area of hybrid music systems for 12 years and teaches at the UdK Berlin. The workshop will be equipped with a standalone (program) programmed in SuperCollider, which will allow us to familiarize ourselves with the employed concepts.
