Workshop in the context of the seminar “Open Lab”
with Anna Comiotto (postgraduate at the KHM since 2019)

On the banks of the Rhine lie sand and debris: quartz, siliceous slate, basalt, and others. Sometimes lava-like, porous material washes up on the beach. Often, these are carbonaceous slags that were created during metal smelting on the banks of the Rhine, or that reached the shore from the loading area of a passing ship. They are connected with wire, coil, and flying antenna, then touched with a graphite needle. After a brief crackle, radio waves become audible: perhaps a few bars of music, or voices.

Am Rheinufer liegen Sand und Geröll: Quarz, Kieselschiefer, Basalt, und Anderes. Manchmal wird lavaähnliches, poröses Material an den Strand gespült. Oft sind dies kohlehaltige Schlacken, die bei der Metallverhüttung am Rheinufer entstanden, oder von der Ladefläche eines vorbeiziehenden Schiffs ans Ufer gelangten. Sie werden mit Draht, Spule und fliegender Antenne verbunden, dann mit einer Graphitnadel berührt. Nach einem kurzen Knistern werden Radiowellen hörbar: vielleicht ein paar Takte Musik, oder Stimmen.
